OKLAHOMA CITY – JoHanna Beathard notched her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds and guided Oklahoma City University to an 82-48 blowout victory over Bacone on Tuesday evening in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Abe Lemons Arena.
Beathard, a sophomore from Fletcher, Okla., surpassed her previous career high of nine points and collected six of her 11 rebounds on the offensive end. Oklahoma City (26-5), ranked fifth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, advanced to the SAC Tournament semifinals where it will take on 13th-ranked Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. Friday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
"As hard as she works, with Brooke (Irwin) going down, it's next player up and she's that next player up," OCU head coach Bo Overton said of Beathard. "I just think she's ready to play, and I'm really proud of her."
Joining Beathard with double figures in the scoring column were NaShyla Hammons with 15 points and Taylor LaCour with 14. LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, had 12 of her 14 points in the first half of Tuesday's contest and added eight rebounds.
The Stars jumped to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter and continued to pull away in the second, extending its lead to 23 with 6:39 to go. OCU held Bacone to just 9 of 31 shooting in the first half and outscored the Lady Warriors in the paint 26-16.
Oklahoma City cranked up the defense to start the second half, outscoring Bacone 20-9 and allowing the Lady Warriors to make just two shots in the third quarter. OCU forced its opponent into 28 total turnovers on Tuesday and turned those turnovers into 30 points.
The Stars were able to cruise in the fourth quarter and earn the victory despite hitting a season-low two 3-pointers. OCU's two triples came from Hammons and Sydney Webb, who finished with nine points and two assists.
Daniela Galindo, the Stars' leading scorer and owner of an NAIA Division I 11th-best 2.79 triples per game average, did not attempt a shot from beyond the arc against Bacone and finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
"I really think that this game today prepares us for Friday," Overton said. "Because Wayland Baptist is a very physical team. They're physical with Daniela, which (Bacone) was tonight, and so I think these last two games have prepared us for Friday. You can see the looks on our players' faces – we're ready to go do this."
