OCU knocks out Wayland Baptist 104-71

Stars surpass 100 points for first time in 2017-18

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University ousted Wayland Baptist (Texas) from the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament Friday at Bill Georgia.
Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., propelled the Stars (27-5) with 29 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Oklahoma City, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I, takes on USAO (28-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the SAC Tournament championship.
OCU advanced to the SAC Tournament title game for the fourth consecutive year. OCU makes its 17th appearance overall in the league tournament final. The Stars and 14th-rated USAO were SAC regular-season co-champions.
Oklahoma City secured its 21st consecutive NAIA Division I Tournament berth and 24th national-tournament appearance overall by advancing to the conference tournament championship.
"I thought we were really sharp today in all phases," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Daniela was in a great rhythm the whole day. I'm really proud of how our bench played early as we had picked up some quick fouls."
Galindo tallied 25 points or better for the 13th time this season while hitting 9 of 11 free-throw attempts. Alexis Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., scored a career-best 17 points to go with seven rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals.
Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, supplied the Stars with 17 points, two blocks and three steals. LaCour shot 7-for-10 from the field. NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, produced 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists for OCU.
The Stars raced out to a 20-5 lead late in the first quarter. Wayland Baptist, ranked 13th, shot 2-for-10 from the floor and committed five turnovers until Galindo hit a free throw with 1:39 left in the first. OCU sank 8 of 11 tries to hit 72.7 percent from the field, while Wayland Baptist shot 29.4 percent in the first period.
"Taylor and Alexis got us going early inside," Overton said. "Our guards really did a good job of attacking the basket."
Hammons' free throws put OCU ahead 94-61 for the Stars' biggest advantage of the contest at the 3:47 mark of the fourth quarter. Torie Shanbour scored to give OCU its first 100-point performance of the season and a 101-69 advantage with 1:58 remaining.
The Stars reached 100 points for the first time since a 113-44 romp over St. Gregory's on Feb. 18, 2017 in Shawnee, Okla. OCU surpassed its season high of 94 points scored against Central Christian (Kan.).
