OCU collects 79-59 win over Texas Wesleyan

Stars have won or shared eight of last nine SAC regular-season titles

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University earned a share its 18th Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title, including its eighth in the last nine years, after smashing Texas Wesleyan 79-59 Sunday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, ended the regular season 25-5, 17-3 in the SAC. OCU notched its 19th 25-win season in the last 20 years and secured a No. 2 seed in the SAC Tournament.
Texas Wesleyan fell to 8-20 on the season and 6-14 in SAC play and were eliminated from making the conference tournament.
"This is a very special group," OCU head coach Bo Overton said of his three seniors Daniela Galindo, Alexis Hill and Brooke Irwin. "When you win a national championship, you come back and have a chance to win another one – which we have, it just shows you how good and how talented they are. The biggest thing though is how hard they work. These were not players who were highly regarded out of high school, these were players who loved to play the game, they put the work in and I feel very lucky to be able to coach them."
Since 1998-99, Oklahoma City has recorded a 612-81 mark for an .883 winning percentage, averaging 31 wins a season. OCU has produced 12 30-win seasons, 25-win seasons in 19 of the past 20 years and 20 consecutive NAIA Division I Tournament appearances while winning eight of the program's nine national championships over the past 20 years.
Oklahoma City owns the NAIA's longest streak of top-25 appearances with 244 consecutive rankings dating back to 1997-98. OCU notched the program's 900th victory this season and has a 912-327 all-time record since its debut season in 1979-80.
Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds. Galindo posted her eighth straight game with at least 20 points and her 12th game this season scoring 25 or more. Payton Taylor, a freshman from Ada, Okla., added 11 points and drilled three 3-pointers for the Stars.
OCU locked down Texas Wesleyan from the opening tip, blitzing the Lady Rams 19-3 and holding them without a field goal in the first quarter. OCU led 34-5 as Texas Wesleyan missed its first 23 shot attempts and headed to the break leading 40-16. The Lady Rams shot 12.5 percent from the field in the first half. Texas Wesleyan's three first-quarter points set an Oklahoma City record for fewest points allowed in a quarter this season.
"We knew we had to get off to a good start defensively, keep attacking on offense and get to halftime playing well," Overton said. "Alexis and Taylor are athletic and long, and with that combination we can do a little more on defense."
The Stars dominated in the paint, outscoring the Lady Rams 14-6 in the first half and 34-20 for the game. OCU also turned eight Texas Wesleyan turnovers into 11 points after the game's first 20 minutes. Galindo had 18 points and eight rebounds in the first half.
Oklahoma City led by as many as 37 on Sunday and finished shooting above its 45.3 percent average, hitting 47.4 percent of its shots against the Lady Rams. Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., produced 10 points, three boards and three assists for the Stars. JoHanna Beathard finished with nine points while Claire Gauer and Taylor LaCour each had eight.

As a No. 2 seed, OCU hosts Bacone at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals at Abe Lemons Arena. The remainder of the SAC Tournament will be March 2-3 in Siloam Springs, Ark.
