Stars overpower SAGU 78-53

OCU swipes 16 steals in Friday’s road win

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Four Stars scored in double figures and Oklahoma City University rolled to a 78-53 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) Friday night at the Sheaffer Center.
Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., led the charge for OCU with 25 points, five rebounds and three steals. Friday was Galindo's seventh consecutive game with at least 20 points. Oklahoma City, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 24-5 overall and 16-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference while SAGU dropped to 13-14 on the year and 8-11 in SAC play.
With the win, OCU is one victory away from garnering its 19th 25-win season in the last 20 years. The Stars will have an opportunity to earn win No. 25 in Sunday's senior day game against Texas Wesleyan.
Joining Galindo with double digits in the scoring column were NaShyla Hammons, Alexis Hill and Taylor LaCour. LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, provided the Stars with 16 points and five rebounds. Hill finished one rebound shy of her third double double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine boards. Hammons added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Stars defense notched 16 steals on Friday and held an opponent to 55 or fewer points for the 10th time this year. SAGU shot just 28.6 percent in the first quarter, allowing OCU to pull away with a double-digit lead after the first ten minutes. The Lady Lions ended the game with a 32.3 field goal percentage and committed 17 turnovers.
SAGU outscored the Stars 16-12 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to six at halftime, but Oklahoma City caught fire on offensive end to begin the second half and stretched its lead back to 10 points off a triple from Hammons. OCU outscored the Lady Lions 13-5 in the final three and a half minutes of the third quarter to take a 17-point lead into the fourth.
OCU led by as many as 30 points when Michaela Kay drained a 3-pointer to give the Stars a 78-48 lead with 2:45 left. Oklahoma City outscored SAGU 34-22 in the paint and turned 18 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.
The Stars return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Texas Wesleyan at Abe Lemons Arena.
