SAGU edges past Oklahoma City 77-70

Stars held to 18.2 percent from 3-point range on Friday

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University lost a 77-70 decision to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) Friday night at the Sheaffer Center, scoring a season low in points and giving up a season high 52 rebounds to its opponent.
Friday's loss was just the fourth time this season Oklahoma City has scored 75 or fewer points in a game. OCU, ranked 12th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, fell to 21-7 on the year and 13-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play while SAGU jumped to 21-8 overall and 13-6 in the SAC.
Eric McCollum, a junior from Newburgh, N.Y., led OCU with a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds – his third double double of the year. Ridell Camidge and Ivan Saicic each gave the Stars 15 points and two steals.
Oklahoma City built an eight-point lead eight minutes into Friday's contest, but SAGU responded with a 13-0 run to steal the momentum and take control. The Lions had a 34-30 advantage at the break and held OCU to 2 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc. The Stars entered among the top 15 best 3-point shooting teams in Division I with a 38.8 percent clip, but made just 18.2 percent of their attempts against SAGU.
A triple from Camidge cut the Lions' lead to two with 17:09 remaining, but SAGU again regained momentum and quickly extended its lead to eight. Oklahoma City continued to battle back and again cut the deficit to two with just over five minutes left off a jumper from Saicic.
The Stars then trailed 75-70 with 2:24 to go, but were unable to slice into the Lions' lead any further. OCU missed two 3's, a jumper and a pair of free throws in the final two minutes, leading to its first loss in nearly two weeks.
Despite the loss, the Stars had a season-best 18 steals on Friday and forced SAGU into 19 turnovers. The two teams finished even in points in the paint with 38 apiece, but the Lions ended with an advantage in second-chance points 17-13 and outrebounded OCU 52-38.
Oklahoma City plays next at 3 p.m. Sunday against No. 20 Texas Wesleyan at Abe Lemons Arena.
