Stars rally past Oklahoma Wesleyan 6-5

Grand View snaps top-ranked OCU's 70-game winning streak vs. NAIA teams

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Laci Joyner's two-run home run brought No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University a 6-5 victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Sunday at the Oklahoma Wesleyan Softball Complex.
The Stars, top-ranked in the NAIA, also fell to 21st-ranked Grand View (Iowa) 8-0 earlier Sunday. OCU (5-1) suffered its first loss to an NAIA foe since Saint Xavier (Ill.) won 1-0 over the Stars May 30, 2016 in the NAIA Softball World Series in Sioux City, Iowa.
Oklahoma City extended its winning streak vs. NAIA competition to 70 in a row with a 5-0 win over Avila (Mo.) on Feb. 10 in the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth, Texas. OCU has won the past two national championships with a 135-4 record in 2016-17.
The Stars erased a 5-3 deficit against Oklahoma Wesleyan with three runs in the fifth inning. Bailey Whitmore nailed an RBI double to left field to touch off a two-out rally. Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., crushed the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence for a two-run blast.
Abby Meador worked the final 1.2 innings to collect a save. Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., retired Kaylee Clifton on an infield popup to catcher Jaci Smith with the bases loaded to seal the victory. Jaden Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., struck out five in 5.1 innings to get the win.
Whitmore, a junior from Oklahoma City, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Joyner drove in three runs.
Grand View's Claudia Ferrell limited the Stars to one hit in five innings while fanning four to gain the win.
The Stars open Sooner Athletic Conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in Waxahachie, Texas.
