Stars smash Mount Mercy 12-3, top Hastings 7-4

Foster, Lytle each finish two-game stretch with four total hits

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University baseball collected a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium, smashing Mount Mercy (Iowa) 12-3 and topping Hastings (Neb.) 7-4.
Garrett Foster and Joe Lytle each finished the two-game stretch with a total of four hits for OCU. The Stars, ranked third in the NAIA, improved to 8-1 on the season, while Hastings fell to 2-3 and Mount Mercy dropped to 1-6.
Oklahoma City got right to work in its first game of the day, blitzing Mount Mercy with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lane Milligan got things started with a triple to center field. Lytle followed with a single, then Branden Grieger and Daniel Costello each singled. Foster later doubled to bring in the fourth run. Costello finished 3-of-4 with two runs and two RBIs against Mount Mercy.
The Stars built the lead to seven after getting three runs across in the bottom of the third. Elliott Cary smacked his first homerun of the season, driving in all three runs for OCU. Mount Mercy fell behind 9-0 in the fourth inning, then gave up three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
A single from Lytle drove in Quinton Walbergh to notch the first run of the inning, then Grieger belted a two-run shot to give the Stars a 12-0 lead. Mount Mercy was able to get three runs in the top sixth, but were held from slicing into the lead any further after Garrett Pike pitched the final two innings in relief and recorded four strikeouts.
Bryce Milligan, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., earned his third win of the season on the mound and allowed just three hits while striking out eight in 5.0 innings. Milligan leads the Stars pitching staff with 29 strikeouts on the year.
In its second game of Saturday's two-game stretch, OCU again got its bats going early and took a lead in the bottom of the first. Lytle drove home Cary for the first run of the game and Grieger later singled to left field to drive in Milligan.
The Stars added a run off a fielding error from Hastings in the bottom of the third, then scratched across two more runs in the bottom fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Craig Knoche, a senior from Tempe, Ariz., dominated on the mound for OCU, tossing five of his seven strikeouts in the first four innings.
Hastings rallied in the top of the fifth and scored three runs to cut the OCU lead to two. The Stars' lead again shrunk when Hastings got another run in the top of the sixth. Oklahoma City headed to the bottom half of the inning with a 5-4 lead.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Lytle knocked a single to right field and gave the Stars two insurance runs and a 7-4 lead. Tyler Milligan closed the game on the mound for OCU, allowing just one hit and earning his second save of the season.
Oklahoma City plays next at 12:30 p.m. Sunday against Hastings (Neb.) at Jim Wade Stadium.
