OCU shuts out Hastings 7-0

Stars notch second shutout of season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University blanked Hastings (Neb.) 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium, allowing its opponent only three hits.
Branden Grieger, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., led the Stars on offense with two hits, a run scored and an RBI. The Stars, ranked third in the NAIA, advanced to 9-1 overall, while Hastings fell to 2-5 on the season.
Neither team was able to make any noise in the first few innings of Sunday's contest, until Grieger notched the first hit of the game for OCU in the bottom of the fourth. Garrett Foster then hit a single to center field, scoring Shaun Corso who had been walked earlier in the inning. Caleb Davis later singled with the bases loaded to bring in another run for the Stars.
Oklahoma City scored two more runs in the next inning, as a sacrifice fly from Foster drove in Joe Lytle. Foster, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., finished the day with a team-high two RBIs while Lytle, a senior from Yukon, Okla., led the team with two runs scored.
A double from Quinton Walbergh then brought Corso home to give the Stars a 4-0 lead heading to the top of the sixth. Hastings couldn't scratch any runs across in the top of the inning and saw the deficit extend to seven in the bottom of the inning.
Lytle reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded and brought in the first of three runs in the inning. The Stars then successfully executed a double steal, with Lytle taking second and Elliot Cary stealing home. Grieger then smacked a double for his second hit of the game and drove in the seventh run of the game for OCU.
Hunter Aguirre and Tanner Andrews combined to finish off Hastings in the top of the seventh, allowing no hits and tossing a strikeout. Kolin Marley, a sophomore from Norman, Okla., started the game on the mound for Oklahoma City and gave up three hits in four innings while striking out two. Marley collected the victory. Miguel Figueroa, a junior from Tuscon, Ariz., pitched two innings in relief and allowed no hits.
The Stars return to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday against Friends (Kan.) at Jim Wade Stadium.
