Stars hold off Central Christian 76-71

Stars even their SAC record at 1-1 in SAC play

MCPHERSON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University prevailed 76-71 over Central Christian (Kan.) on Saturday night at Dr. Jerry E. Alexander Arena.
Chris Williams led all scorers with 22 points. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 6-2, 1-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Williams, a senior from Denver, added five rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block while shooting 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Trae Bryant, a junior from Wilmington, N.C., supplied OCU with 14 points, three assists, two blocks, two rebounds and a steal, while Eric McCollum, a senior from Newburgh, N.Y., led all players with eight rebounds.
Williams sank a 3-pointer to push OCU's lead to 15 at 39-24 with 4:50 remaining in the first half. The Tigers shaved away at the Stars' advantage until T.J. Williams' putback to even the score 45-45 at 2:30 minutes into the second half.
Central Christian built their lead to 58-50 with 12:31 to play on a Paul Ard II jumper in the paint off an OCU turnover. Oklahoma City responded with a 10-1 run as Williams scored off a Bryant feed to give the Stars back the lead 60-59 at the 8:27 mark.
OCU and Central Christian traded baskets the rest of the way, with the biggest lead being six by OCU on a Williams steal and coast-to-coast layup with 52 seconds left. Central Christian attempted to get back in the game with two scores and quick fouls, but OCU made 3 out of 4 free throws in the final 29 seconds to secure the five-point victory.
The Stars continue league play against John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Thursday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
