OCU captures third consecutive SAC regular-season title

Stars enter conference tournament as top seed

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University wrapped up the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball championship and No. 1 seed in the league postseason tournament after holding off Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday afternoon 25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9 at Abe Lemons Arena.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, keyed OCU with 16 kills, 12 digs and four blocks. The Stars finished the regular season 27-3, 18-2 in the SAC.
Oklahoma City captured its third consecutive SAC regular-season crown. OCU shared the SAC regular-season title with Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) for the second consecutive year. Southwestern Assemblies of God completed the regular season also 27-3, 18-2 in SAC play.
OCU meets Panhandle State at 7:30 p.m. in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars improved to 2-1 in matches decided in five sets this year. OCU took the lead 6-4 in the fifth and decisive set as Bjelobrk nailed a kill. Bjelobrk had two kills and teamed with Olivia Nutter on a block during a 4-0 run that rallied OCU from a 4-2 deficit.
OCU's Ella Lofton broke a 6-6 tie by knocking down a kill. The Stars tallied the final three points of the match as Lacy Beeler crushed a pair of kills, then Taylor Horton served up an ace.
The Stars reeled off a fourth-set 7-0 run that turned around a 7-6 deficit. Horton had a kill during the splurge, which put OCU up 13-7. Horton and Nutter smacked kills to give OCU the final four points of the set to force the fifth set.

Beeler, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., totaled 15 kills, eight digs and two blocks, and Lofton, a sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, turned in 14 kills and four blocks for Oklahoma City.
Horton, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., produced 49 assists, 11 digs and two aces, while Lauren Hermes, a junior from The Colony, Texas, tracked down 19 digs. Isabel Harwell, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., scooped up 16 digs, while Caitlin Bosarge, a junior from Mustang, Okla., contributed nine digs. Nutter, a freshman from Plano, Texas, led OCU with six blocks.
