OCU sinks Dillard 71-58

Stars outscore Dillard 40-23 in second half

SAN ANTONIO – Oklahoma City University rallied past Dillard (La.) 71-58 on Friday at the Mabee Gymnasium in the Halo Classic hosted by Our Lady of the Lake (Texas).
Mallory Lockhart equaled her season best with 18 points while sinking a season-high six 3-pointers for OCU. The Stars, ranked 10th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 5-1 in 2018-19.
Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, hit 6 of 10 shots from the field and 6 of 9 3-pointers on Friday. Brennyn Seagler, a junior from Gruver, Texas, produced season highs with 12 points and six assists for Oklahoma City. Seagler shot 5-for-10 from the floor and grabbed three steals.
Abby Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., added 11 points for OCU, and Payton Taylor, a sophomore from Ada, Okla., chipped in eight points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
NaShyla Hammons and Taylor LaCour each hauled in a team-best six rebounds, while Taylor Sylvester contributed three blocks for the Stars.
OCU overcame an eight-point first-quarter deficit and a 35-31 halftime hole. Oklahoma City sank 51.7 percent from the field while shooting 8-for-11 from beyond the arc in the second half.
The Stars have held opponents to a 28.4 percent field-goal percentage this season. Dillard managed 34.3 percent shooting from the field Friday. Our Lady of the Lake had the highest field-goal percentage by an OCU opponent this season at 37.1 percent Nov. 17.
In the third quarter, Michaela Kay connected on a 3-pointer to give Oklahoma City the lead for good 42-40 with 4:25 left.
Lockhart and Seagler combined for back-to-back-to-back 3s early in the fourth period. Lockhart nailed her second consecutive 3 to provide the Stars a 58-44 advantage with 7:36 showing. Lockhart buried another trey for a 61-47 OCU lead.
Jordyn Eaton gave OCU its largest lead 71-54 with a 3-pointer at the 1:29 mark of the fourth.
Selzer scored seven points as the Stars went on a 10-2 run to close the first quarter. Seagler sank a jumper to put OCU on top 22-21 late in the period.
OCU meets Edward Waters (Fla.) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Halo Classic.
