OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's rally against Our Lady of the Lake fell short in 89-81 loss Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in a battle of ranked NAIA Division I women's basketball teams.
Mallory Lockhart scored a career high 18 points to go with two rebounds and two assists, while Abby Selzer kept up her domination down low kicking in 17 points five rebounds.
Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, shot 7-12 from the floor and 4-9 shooting from 3-point range in 21 minutes. Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., turned in a 6-8 shooting performance in 17 minutes on the floor. Lockhart and Selzer helped lead OCU to win the point off the bench battle 40-33.
Taylor Sylvester, a junior from Chickasha, Okla., added nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks. NaShyla Hammons, a junior from Oklahoma City, contributed nine points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Shamika Smith, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., had a game high six assists to go with two points and two rebounds.
OLLU scored the most points against the Stars since the meeting between these two team last season in San Antonio on Nov. 25, 2017 in which they scored 96 in a double overtime game that OLLU won 96-93. Kasey Saldana led all scorers with 33 points shooting 8-15 from beyond the arc, the last time OCU allowed someone to score 30 points was Alexis Shannon from MACU Feb. 3, 2018 when she scored 31 points.
The Stars dominated in most categories for the night grabbing a 42-39 edge on the boards, scored 36 points in the paint to the Saints 20, lead with 22 points off turnovers to 14, had a 20-16 edge in second chance opportunities, shot 42.4-percent from the floor to 37.1 percent, but OLLU won the fast break battle 11-4, the 3-point battle shooting 12-26 for 46.2 percent to 6-24 for 25 percent and the Saints made 21 of its 33 free-throw attempts where OCU dropped 19 of its 25.
OCU returns to action at 2 p.m. Friday against Dillard (La.) in the first game of the Our Lady of the Lake Classic.
