OCU snags 71-59 win over Philander Smith

Stars continue playing stingy defense Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University collected a 71-59 win over Philander Smith (Ark.) on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars held an opponent below 30 percent shooting from the field once again. Oklahoma City, ranked 10th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, moved to 4-0 on the season.
OCU leads the NAIA in field-goal percentage defense, having limited foes to 24.8 percent shooting from the floor so far. The Stars kept Philander Smith to 26 percent shooting Friday. The highest an opponent has shot against OCU is 27.1 percent, which LSU-Shreveport did Nov. 10 in Waxahachie, Texas.
Philander Smith managed a season high in points by an OCU opponent. The Stars have permitted teams to score 49.8 points per game and entered Friday's contest seventh nationally in fewest points allowed. OCU stopped Philander Smith's five-game winning string.
The Stars' Abby Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., produced her first career double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. She achieved season highs in rebounding, blocked shots (five), free throws made (10) and free-throw attempts (11). Mallory Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, notched season bests with 13 points, four assists and three 3-pointers.
Michaela Kay, a senior from Spokane, Wash., added nine points and two steals, while Taylor Sylvester, a junior from Chickasha, Okla., supplied OCU with eight points, five rebounds and seven blocks. NaShyla Hammons, a junior from Oklahoma City, posted eight points, five rebounds and two rejections. The Stars registered 14 blocks.
OCU reeled off an 11-2 run to pad its lead to a game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. Lockhart nailed a trey to spark OCU to a 60-45 advantage. Sylvester's layup capped the run for a 64-45 advantage with 6:36 remaining.
Philander Smith tallied the game's first five points. Selzer scored six points in the first quarter to rally OCU into the lead. Selzer
had a 3-point play to put the Stars on top 13-11 just before the end of the period.
The Stars take on 15th-ranked Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
