OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University nipped Texas Wesleyan 17-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 18-16 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena for its third consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball championship.
Oklahoma City reeled in both the SAC regular-season and tournament titles for the third consecutive year. The Stars (30-3) have four SAC Tournament crowns won in 2010, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
OCU notched its fourth 30-win season ever. The Stars clinched a national-tournament berth after sharing the conference regular-season crown with Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas). OCU reached the NAIA Championships for the fourth time.
Oklahoma City will play in the NAIA Championship Opening Round on Nov. 17. The NAIA unveils the national-tournament bracket 10 a.m. CST Monday on its Facebook page, facebook.com/PlayNAIA, via Facebook Live.
The Stars' Marijana Bjelobrk, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, secured the SAC Tournament most valuable player and SAC Tournament all-tournament acclaim for the second year in a row. OCU's Lauren Hermes, a junior from The Colony, Texas, took an all-tournament selection.
"We have hard-working young ladies who believe in each other and play selfless volleyball," OCU coach Santiago Restrepo said. "They adapt to anything teams throw at them."
Texas Wesleyan advanced to the SAC Tournament final and collected the league's tournament bid into the NAIA Championships for the second year in a row. The Lady Rams' Tierra Coverson and Sasha Robinson made the all-tournament team. Robinson took her second SAC Tournament all-tournament accolade.
In the fifth set, Coverson and Robinson teamed on a block to extend the match after OCU had match point at 14-13. Ella Lofton of the Stars crushed kills to give the Stars second and third chances to secure the win.
Lacy Beeler hammered a kill to put OCU on top 17-16, then Michelle Krenowicz served up the ace to finish off the victory for the Stars.
In the fourth set, Robinson put Texas Wesleyan ahead 5-0 by smacking a kill. OCU answered with four consecutive points to move up 15-12 sparked by Kenady Bertling's kill.
Texas Wesleyan took the third set and led two sets to one. Chastiny Brown nailed two kills and combined with Hannah Altman on a block to wrap up the set for the Lady Rams.
Bjelobrk sparked OCU with 15 kills, eight digs and three blocks, while Hermes posted her second consecutive 30-dig performance with 31. Hermes has three of the 18 30-dig outings by the Stars.
Taylor Horton, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., supplied OCU with her 15th double-double of the season with 30 assists and a career-high 21 digs, and Beeler, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., produced 12 kills, 11 digs and four blocks for her 13th double-double this year. Caitlin Bosarge, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., picked up 13 digs.
Robinson provided Texas Wesleyan with her fifth triple-double this year and third consecutive triple-double with 19 kills, 27 digs, 18 assists and four blocks. Coverson added 11 kills and eight blocks, while Brenda Pargas amassed 26 assists and nine digs. Brianna Sitton scooped up 21 digs for the Lady Rams.
