OCU pounds Texas Wesleyan 82-62

LaCour goes for season-high 22 points in Saturday’s win

FORT WORTH, Texas – Taylor LaCour scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Oklahoma City University to an 82-62 victory over Texas Wesleyan Saturday evening at the Sid Richardson Center.
With the win, OCU earned its sixth consecutive victory and extended its winning streak in the Sooner Athletic Conference to 17 games. The Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 12-2 on the year and 6-0 in SAC play while Texas Wesleyan fell to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in the SAC.
"We really got into a good rhythm in the third quarter with Brooke and Taylor inside and Daniela on the outside," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "It started with us getting stops and turning them into points. Payton Taylor keeps getting better and better and I thought LaCour played her best overall game."
Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., hit four 3-pointers and added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Stars. Also scoring in double figures was Brooke Irwin, who produced 11 points, eight rebounds and one block.
The Lady Rams scored the first points of Saturday's contest, but triples from Galindo and Payton Taylor sparked the Stars on a 14-0 run to give OCU early control. Oklahoma City turned up the intensity on the defensive end during its run, forcing Texas Wesleyan into six turnovers and turned those turnovers into 10 points.
TWU fought its way back in the second quarter, twice cutting the OCU lead to six. The Lady Rams buried a 3 with three minutes left in the first half to make it 30-24 Stars, then knocked down a deep trey as time expired to cut the deficit to three points. LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, fueled OCU with nine points in the first half.
The Stars were held to just 2 of 10 shooting in the second quarter while the Lady Rams went 8 of 17 from the field. OCU was also outrebounded in the first half 18-14 and gave up seven second-chance points.
Oklahoma City bounced back from a rough second quarter by blitzing Texas Wesleyan in the opening minutes of the third, scoring seven unanswered and building a double-digit lead. The Stars went on to outscore the Lady Rams 34-9 in the third, taking their largest lead of the game (30) off a pair of free throws from Irwin.
NaShyla Hammons and Taylor each finished the game with four steal apiece, contributing to the 19 turnovers OCU forced on Saturday. The Stars turned those turnovers into 28 points and won the battle on the boards 37-30.
Oklahoma City returns to action on Jan. 13, as the Stars travel to Bethany, Okla., to take on Southwestern Christian for a 3 p.m. tip.
