Irwin leads Stars past SAGU 91-49

OCU earns fifth consecutive win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University kicked off its first game of the second semester with a dominant 91-49 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., poured in 22 points, grabbed four rebounds and had two blocks in 15 minutes, leading the Stars to their fifth straight win. OCU, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference while SAGU fell to 5-6 and 2-3 in the SAC.
"Our game plan was to try to get our post players involved early, and I thought we did that with Brooke and Taylor," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "And then Alexis and JoHanna come in the game and kept it going, so it was kind of like we were relentless inside."
Oklahoma City set the tone defensively in the first quarter, allowing the Lady Lions just two made baskets on 16 field goal attempts. The Stars also excelled on the offensive end, getting easy buckets in the paint that resulted in a 14-point lead after the game's first 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw OCU continue its dominance on both sides of the floor, forcing SAGU into tough shots on defense and possessing great pace and steady ball movement on offense. At the break, the Stars were shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from deep while holding their opponent to 28.1 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from 3-point land.
Taylor LaCour was the only other Star to score in double figures on Thursday, but OCU got at least seven or more points from six other players. LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, finished with 10 points and six boards. NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, tallied eight points and snagged 10 rebounds. JoHanna Beathard, a sophomore from Fletcher, Okla., added nine points on 4 of 8 shooting to go along with three assists and two blocks in her season debut.
"I think JoHanna gives us some depth inside," Overton said. "And she can score the ball well. She's a very smart player that can get the ball in the basket."
Oklahoma City cruised in the second half, outscoring the Lady Lions 43-24. The Stars ended the contest with a marginal advantage in nearly every category, but none as commanding as points in the paint – OCU outscored the Lady Lions 50-14 inside. The Stars outscored SAGU by 13 in points off turnovers and by 23 bench points. Oklahoma City also capitalized at the charity stripe, finishing 92.9 percent (13-for-14) from the line while SAGU shot only 55.6 percent (5-of-9).
The Stars play next at 3 p.m. on Saturday against Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth, Texas.
