Stars prevail 80-66 over John Brown

Camidge delivers 25 points, seven 3-pointers for OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rolled to an 80-66 win over John Brown (Ark.) on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City's Ridell Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., produced 25 points and equaled his season high with seven 3-pointers. The Stars, ranked 21st in NAIA Division I men's basketball, went to 15-5, 8-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU racked up its fourth consecutive win and moved into a tie for second place in the SAC standings at one game behind league-leading USAO. The Stars collide with USAO at 8 p.m. Thursday in Chickasha, Okla.
The Stars held John Brown to 45.1 percent shooting from the field and 37.0 percent shooting in the first period. John Brown committed 10 turnovers in the second half. OCU has limited opponents to 65.8 points a game during their winning string.
"We are guarding a little bit better," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "That's been the key these last four games now. I think they're really starting to buy into this. I hear guys on the bench saying, 'Hey, let's hold them under 70.' They're starting to take a little more pride in this thing. That's really starting to elevate our team. We're starting to get tougher, and we're starting to get stops when we need to dig down and get stops. They're a difficult team to defend. We did a much better job pressuring them than the first time we played them for sure."
Camidge sank 9 of 14 attempts from the field and 7 of 9 3-point shots, while collecting five rebounds and two steals. Camidge averaged 33.5 points in OCU's home-and-home sweep of John Brown. He scored 42 points and canned seven treys Dec. 9 in Siloam Springs, Ark.
"He's been playing like this most of the year," Patel said of Camidge. "He's doing a much better job of scoring within what we're doing and not forcing as many shots. That's been the biggest key has been finding where his shots come from within what we're doing."
OCU overcame an eight-point first-half deficit. Nathan Corder hit a trey to give John Brown a 13-5 lead at the 14:15 mark of the first period.
The lead changed hands six times until OCU reeled off a 14-2 second-half run. The Stars grabbed a 56-44 advantage on Camidge's lay-in with 11:26 to go. Terence Bonhomme and Camidge drilled 3s during OCU's key surge. Camidge buried another trey for OCU's largest lead at 75-59 around the three-minute mark.
Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., notched his team-best fifth double-double this season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Bonhomme, a senior from St. Martinville, La., added 12 points, three rebounds and three 3-pointers.
