Stars cruise past Bacone 88-47

OCU holds opponent to under 30 percent shooting for sixth times this year

OKLAHOMA CITY – Three Stars scored double-figures as Oklahoma City University cruised to an 88-47 victory over Bacone Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., led the way with her first double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Oklahoma City, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Bacone fell to 11-9 on the year and 3-8 in SAC play.
"I was really proud of the way we prepared for this game," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "We had a couple new wrinkles that I thought helped and you can really tell how much Payton Taylor has grown. She was really strong with the ball today, ran the team and then of course with Daniela, she had 25 and 10.
"The beast though was NaShyla," Overton said. "Nine rebounds and all of them were in traffic, and she made some 3's and ran the floor and I was really proud of that group."
NaShyla Hammons added career-high 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks for OCU while Brooke Irwin supplied the Stars with 13 points and four boards. Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, had her second consecutive game with at least 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Payton Taylor, a freshman from Ada, Okla., notched eight points, two rebounds and two assists in the win.
The Stars jumped out to a double-digit lead when a jumper from Galindo put OCU ahead 18-7 with 3:12 left in the first. Oklahoma City got points from six different players in the first quarter, and allowed the Lady Warriors to hit just three buckets in the game's first 10 minutes.
OCU continued to put pressure on Bacone and convert turnovers into points in the second quarter. The Lady Warriors headed to the break with 12 turnovers and allowed the Stars to turn those into 24 points. Galindo had 16 of her 25 points at halftime.
Oklahoma City started the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a triple from Galindo. A free throw from Sydney Webb gave the Stars their largest lead of the night at 42 points with 4:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. Bacone did not make a basket in the fourth quarter, getting all six of its points from the charity stripe. The Lady Warriors finished Thursday's contest shooting just 21.7 percent from the floor and 9.5 percent from 3, the sixth time this season OCU has held an opponent to under 30 percent shooting.
The Stars assisted on 20 of their 28 made shots and converted 23 Bacone turnovers into 27 points. OCU also got solid production out of its bench with 20 points, highlighted by Alexis Hill and Webb who each put up six.
Oklahoma City rounds out its five-game home stretch with a 3 p.m. tilt against John Brown (Ark.) Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
