Strong second half propels Stars past John Brown 66-51

OCU outscores Golden Eagles 34-18 in second half

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University had four players finish with double figures in the scoring column and used a dominant second half to knock off John Brown (Ark.) 66-51 Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., provided the Stars with a team-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocks. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. John Brown fell to 13-8 on the year and 7-5 in SAC play.
Joining Irwin in double figures was Daniela Galindo and Michaela Kay who each added a dozen points. Galindo also tallied five rebounds and five assists. NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the first period, but eight second-chance points allowed the Stars to head into the second with a 17-12 advantage. The Golden Eagles tightened up defensively in the second quarter, holding OCU to 1-of-6 from downtown and ended half on a 9-4 run to take a 33-32 lead into halftime.
Oklahoma City forced three John Brown turnovers in the first three minutes of the third quarter and regained control of the lead when Galindo got a steal and fast break layup to put the Stars ahead 36-35. OCU continued to keep up the pressure on the defensive end, converting seven total JBU turnovers into 12 points. The Stars outscored the Golden Eagles 16-4 in the third, setting a season record for fewest points allowed in a quarter.
OCU opened the fourth with Alexis Hill dishing it to Hammons for an open three that gave the Stars a 14-point lead with 9:47 to go. Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., finished with a season high five assists. John Brown was unable to claw its way back and was outscored 34-18 in the second half. The Golden Eagles entered Saturday's contest averaging 11.53 3s per game, but hit only five against OCU.
Oklahoma City dominated in the paint, outscoring its opponent 32-20. The Golden Eagles finished with 19 total turnovers and saw those turnovers turn into 24 points for OCU. Taylor LaCour and Payton Taylor each finished with nine points for the Stars.
The Stars return to the court at 6 p.m. Thursday for a road matchup against USAO in Chickasha, Okla.
