Stars rout Panhandle State 74-48

Galindo scores 26 points in Saturday’s win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University bounced back from its first loss since Nov. 25 with a 74-48 pounding over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena, getting 26 points from Daniela Galindo
Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., reached 1,000 career points. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Panhandle State fell to 10-7 on the year and 3-7 in SAC play.

Galindo hit the 1,000-point mark with OCU on her layup at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter. Galindo increased her point total to 1,024 on Saturday. She finished 9-of-18 from the field and added six steals and four assists.
"I thought we came out early with a lot of energy," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "I was really proud of the way they came back today after Thursday's loss. (Panhandle State) tried to take away our inside game – and they did a good job of that – but it allowed our guards to run more free and you can see that with Daniela."
The Stars raced to a 10-point advantage five and a half minutes into Saturday's contest when a layup from Galindo put OCU ahead 14-4. Oklahoma City held the Aggies to just six points in the first quarter, the second-lowest mark for an OCU opponent this season. The Stars held Mid-America Christian to five points in a quarter on Dec. 2.
Galindo fueled Oklahoma City with seven points in the first period and continued her hot shooting in the second quarter, putting her team ahead 39-9 with 2:47 left in the half. The Stars headed into the break with a 42-14 lead and forced Panhandle State in 22 turnovers in 20 minutes of action. OCU shot 48.4 percent from the field in the first half and held the Aggies to just 29.4 percent shooting.
Panhandle State fought its way back in the third, outscoring the Stars 27-10. Oklahoma City made just two baskets in the quarter and turned the ball over six times. The Aggies continued to slice into the OCU lead, cutting the deficit to 10 points with 9:19 left in the fourth. The Stars responded by ending the game on a 21-5 run and shutting the door on any thought of a comeback from the Aggies.
"I thought that energy we had in the first half –  it was almost like we just used it all, we were out of gas" Overton said. "I thought Panhandle got some second chances, made some threes and got to the basket. But then in the fourth quarter I thought we came back with a little more energy and finished the game off."
OCU finished with a 30-12 advantage in the paint, with Brooke Irwin and Taylor LaCour providing a good portion of those points. Irwin supplied the Stars with nine points, five boards and three blocks while LaCour contributed nine points, six rebounds and three assists. NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the win.
Oklahoma City is back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday for a matchup against Bacone at Abe Lemons Arena.
