Stars fall to Wayland Baptist 66-57

OCU’s conference win-streak snapped at 19

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end as No. 8 Wayland Baptist (Texas) turned 31 Stars' turnovers into 30 points and handed OCU a 66-57 loss Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Brooke Irwin supplied the Stars with her first double-double of the year, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The loss dropped Oklahoma City, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. OCU had won 20 consecutive games in league play and 28 straight home games before Thursday night's loss.
"It was a tough game for us today – when you have 31 turnovers and they get 30 points off those turnovers" OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "The great thing about that is that it's early enough where we can fix a lot of these things. Some of that was execution, people being at the wrong place on the floor. All these things we can fix and our players are smart so they'll learn from this."
The Flying Queens came out strong in the first quarter, forcing OCU into tough shots and hitting three treys to take a 17-14 lead at the end of the period. Wayland Baptist's lead got as big as nine points in the first half, when a pair of free throws put the Flying Queens ahead 23-14 with 8:43 to go. The Stars responded with a 10-5 run and cut the WBU lead to three after two made free throws from Taylor LaCour. OCU trailed 38-33 at the break.
Despite the five-point deficit, Oklahoma City was outshooting its opponent from both the field and 3-point range at the half. The Stars went 50 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from 3 while WBU went 45.5 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3. Wayland Baptist made up for its shooting by forcing 17 OCU turnovers and turning those into 16 points.
Oklahoma City clawed its way back in the third, as a layup from Daniela Galindo tied the game at 44 midway through the period. Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Stars took a 47-46 lead with 2:06 left in the quarter, then WBU finished the final two minutes on a 7-0 run to take a six-point lead into the fourth. The Flying Queens' lead blossomed to 11 early in the quarter, but again shrunk when a basket from Galindo cut the lead to five with 1:14 to go.
Wayland Baptist buried a 3 on the next possession and ended the game on a 6-2 run, halting OCU's nine-game winning streak. The Stars gave up 12 fast break points compared to their two, and got just 10 points from their bench while WBU got 21. Oklahoma City did outscore its opponent 28-22 in the paint, the 11th time the Stars have done that this season.
LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, added 14 points, five rebounds and went a perfect 8 of 8 from the charity stripe for OCU. Michaela Kay, a junior from Spokane, Wash., finished with seven points, four boards and three steals.
The Stars return to their home floor on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tilt against Oklahoma Panhandle State at Abe Lemons Arena.
