Stars knock off Southwestern Christian 59-54

OCU improves to 7-0 in conference play

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University held off a late rally from Southwestern Christian Saturday afternoon to keep an unblemished record in Sooner Athletic Conference play, knocking off the Eagles 59-54 at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Taylor LaCour led the way for OCU, scoring a game-high 18 points, grabbing six boards and blocking two shots in the win. The victory boosted Oklahoma City, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. Southwestern Christian fell to 6-7 on the year and 3-5 in SAC play.
"When you go on the road in this league, any win is a good win," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "They tried to take away easy shots from us, which forced us to make some long shots. And that gets into the fact that Payton Taylor gets us off to a great start and then that got Daniela going."
Payton Taylor got things started for the Stars, knocking down back-to-back treys in the game's first two minutes. Oklahoma City struggled to find an offensive rhythm for the remainder of the first quarter, scoring just four more points after Taylor's two triples.
The Stars bounced back in the second quarter, getting contributions from Michaela Kay and Daniela Galindo. Kay finished the first half with five points, four rebounds and a steal that led to a transition 3 by Galindo to give the Stars a 15-11 lead. Galindo had eight points heading into the break after starting the game 1 of 5 shooting.
Oklahoma City outrebounded the Eagles in the first half 21-14, collecting seven offensive boards in the process. The Stars also shared the ball well in the first 20 minutes of Saturday's contest, assisting on seven of their 11 made field goals. OCU carried a 30-19 lead into the break.
Brooke Irwin scored a basket in the paint to give the Stars a 35-21 lead two minutes into the third quarter, but Southwestern Christian responded with a 12-4 scoring spurt to cut the OCU lead to six points. A pair of free throws from Kay would extend the Stars' lead to double digits minutes later.
Southwestern Christian made on final push late in the fourth quarter, cutting a 10-point Oklahoma City lead to five points in a span of one minute and 20 seconds. The Stars were able to play keep-away for the game's final seconds to secure the win.
Taylor, a freshman from Ada, Okla., finished with 14 points and three rebounds for OCU. Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., added nine points and eight boards while Galindo finished with eight points and three rebounds. Kay, a junior from Spokane, Wash., had seven points and four assists.
The Stars play next at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Central Christian (Kan.) at Abe Lemons Arena.
