OCU edges past Southwestern Christian 91-89

Bonhomme, Camidge each tally fifth game with 20 or more points

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University edged past Southwestern Christian 91-89 at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, getting 20-plus points from Terence Bonhomme and Ridell Camidge.
Bonhomme got a key offensive rebound and a bucket to make it a two-possession game with 13 seconds left, wrapping up the victory and halting a late push from the Eagles. SCU hit a 3 at the buzzer to make the final score 91-89. Oklahoma City, ranked 14th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, moved to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Southwestern Christian dropped to 9-7 on the year and 4-4 in SAC play.
"Our kids played really played hard, but we made some mistakes and still have room to grow," OCU head coach Vinay Patel said. "But I do like the way this thing's headed. I give our guys credit, they really fought today."
Bonhomme, a senior from St. Martinville, La., notched 25 points and six rebounds while Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., tallied 23 points – each their fifth game of at least 20 points this season. Samuel Williams earned his third double-double of the season for OCU, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the win.
Oklahoma City got off to a hot start in Saturday's contest, building a 23-9 lead seven minutes into the first half. Eric McCollum made an instant impact all over the floor, scoring the Stars' first five points, snagging a pair of rebounds and swatting two shots.
Southwestern Christian wouldn't go away easy, as the Eagles responded to OCU's early blitz with a 20-6 run and tied the game at 29 apiece with 6:52 left in the first half. The Eagles took a seven-point lead with just over three minutes to go, then the Stars ensued on an 11-4 run and again tied the game off a Bonhomme fast break lay-in.
SCU knocked down a free throw with six seconds left to take a 48-47 lead into halftime. The Stars shot just 25.0 percent from behind the arc after the game's first 20 minutes and allowed the Eagles a 28-24 advantage in the paint.
Neither team was able to create much separation at the beginning of the second half, until Oklahoma City's William Robinson went on a scoring tare to give the Stars' some momentum. Robinson, a junior from Chicago, broke a 65-65 tie by hitting a midrange jumper then splashed a 3 on the next possession to give OCU a five-point lead with 10:42 remaining. Robinson finished with a season-high 10 points.
The Stars' lead grew to nine points with three and half minutes to play, but Southwestern Christian again had an answer. The Eagles cut the deficit to three points with under a minute to go, then were forced to foul OCU with time winding down.
Oklahoma City returns home on Tuesday for a 7:45 p.m. tip against Central Christian (Kan.) at Abe Lemons Arena.
