OCU stays perfect with 3-1 win over Bethany

Stars are off to second-best start in men’s soccer history

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City men's soccer team earned its seventh-straight victory Tuesday night, prevailing 3-1 over Bethany (Kan.) at Stars Field.
The Stars are off to their second-best start in men's soccer history at 7-0. The school's best start came in the 1989 season when OCU rattled off nine consecutive victories. Bethany fell to 1-4-1 with the loss.
Alexandre Taiar, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, got things started for OCU, directing a shot that came from the left side of the box and landed inside the right post for the match's first goal. James Beattie notched the assist.
Bethany tied the game at one in the 41st minute, when CJ Lewis got past the keeper and tapped in a goal for the Swedes.
Beattie, a junior from Glasgow, Scotland, secured the game-winning goal for OCU not even 60 seconds after the Bethany goal. Henrik Verolet guided a pass that connected with Beattie a few yards inside the right side of the box and Beattie did the rest.
The goal was Beattie's third of the season. Taiar, Verolet, Aboubakr Diallo and Logan Stewart have also tallied three goals for OCU this season.
In the 57th minute junior Alex Buckley put the game away for good as he scored off an assist from Taiar inside the right corner of the box.
The Stars led in both total shots (eight) and shots on goal (four) on Tuesday night. Bethany produced six total shots, three on goal.
Vladimir Kalajdzic, a senior from Novi Sad, Serbia, collected two saves in the win. He now holds a 7-0 record in goal and has 35 saves and four goals allowed in 2017.
Oklahoma City next takes on Kansas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Saturday at Stars Field.
