Stars slip past Mid-America Christian 12-10

No. 1-ranked OCU faces St. Gregory's at 2 p.m. Sunday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University fended off Mid-America Christian 12-10 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
Mid-America Christian plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but OCU's Tyler Milligan retired Pedro Varela on a groundout to third base to finish the game. The Stars (43-8) take on St. Gregory's in the bracket final 2 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Oklahoma City, top-ranked in the NAIA, aims to advance to the tournament championship game 1 p.m. Monday in Chickasha, Okla., with a victory Sunday. St. Gregory's needs two wins Sunday to make the title game.
Kevin Lentzner had a sacrifice fly, then Cameron Kirk's ground ball plated another run to cut OCU's lead to 12-10 for two out in the ninth.
Joe Lytle ripped an RBI double to left field, and Jared Baker socked a run-scoring base hit to right to provide the Stars the difference-making runs. OCU went on top 12-7 in the top of the ninth. Lane Milligan led off the ninth by crushing a triple off the right center-field wall.
Oklahoma City built an 8-0 second-inning advantage. Baker belted a three-run home run to right field to ignite the Stars' offense in the first.
Hunter Aguirre, Lytle and Shaun Corso nailed RBI singles in the second. Cory Linn added a sacrifice fly, and Branden Grieger drew a bases-loaded walk to give OCU its eight-run lead.
Garrett Foster knocked in a run with a base hit to left in the eighth. Aguirre tacked on another eighth-inning for OCU by zinging a line drive off pitcher Zach Carley's glove.
Lytle, a junior from Yukon, Okla., went 3-for-5, scored three times and drove in two runs, while Baker, a senior from Edmond, Okla., was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs for OCU. Grieger, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., turned in a 3-for-5 day with a double, triple, run scored and a run driven in. Aguirre, Foster and Lane Milligan posted a pair of hits each.
Matt Young notched the victory. Young, a junior right-hander from Glendora, Calif., struck out 10 in six innings. Young (8-2) has reached double-digit strikeout totals in four of his last five outings. Holden Lyons worked two innings for the Stars before Tyler Milligan entered in the ninth.
