Stars sweep Southwestern Christian 13-3, 2-1

Fourth-ranked OCU goes to 2-0 in league play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took a doubleheader from Southwestern Christian 13-3 and 2-1 on Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Skyler Bean, Garrett Foster and Jerame Littell smacked home runs in the first game, while Jared Baker nailed a homer in the nightcap to power the Stars to victory in their 2017 Sooner Athletic Conference opener. OCU, ranked fourth in NAIA baseball, went to 23-4, 2-0 in the SAC.
Oklahoma City jumped from receiving votes in the preseason to fourth in the first in-season national rankings. The Stars have gone 6-2 against top-25 foes this season.
In the fourth inning of the first contest, Foster led off the bottom of the inning by pounding a solo blast beyond the left-field wall. Joe Lytle nailed an RBI single, and Branden Grieger reached home plate on a wild pitch for the Stars.
Bean hammered a two-run shot over the left-field wall in the third. Foster provided OCU with a 7-2 advantage with an RBI double to right in the fourth. Littell clouted a solo homer to right-center in the fifth.
OCU reached double digits in runs for the 15th time this season after Lane Milligan and Littell drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the sixth. Grieger added a sacrifice fly, and Lytle had an RBI double. Baker's sacrifice fly put the Stars up 13-3.
Lytle, a junior from Yukon, Okla., went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Foster, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs driven in. Bean, a senior from Garland, Texas, scored three times and drove in two runs while going 1-for-2.
Shaun Corso
and Cory Linn each had two hits, and Littell scored twice and drove in two runs.
Matt Young fanned five while scattering seven hits in seven innings. Young, a junior right-hander from Glendora, Calif., moved to 3-1 on the year.
In the second game, Baker knocked in OCU's first run with a base hit along the middle of the infield in the first. Baker crushed a 2-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a 2-0 OCU lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Michael Lowe hit a homer for Southwestern Christian to start the sixth. Tyler Milligan retired Lowe on a fly ball to right to end the game.
Mark Simon struck out seven and allowed one run on seven hits in six innings. Simon, a senior right-hander from Houston, moved to 4-0 on the year. Milligan, a junior from Wagoner, Okla., pitched a scoreless seventh for his third save of 2017.
Baker, a senior from Edmond, Okla., went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in two runs. Corso, a junior from Lancaster, Pa., was 2-for-3.
OCU concludes its series with Southwestern Christian at 1 p.m. Friday at Dolese Park in Oklahoma City.
