OCU blasts Mount Mercy 11-1, 9-1

Ellis, Smith smack home runs for No. 1-ranked Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University ripped Mount Mercy (Iowa) 11-1, 9-1 on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Jaci Smith pounded two home runs in the first game, while Madison Ellis added a two-run blast in the second game. The Stars, top-ranked in the NAIA, extended their program-best unbeaten start to 32-0.
Smith, a sophomore from Godley, Texas, opened the scoring on the day by nailing a homer beyond the right-field wall in the bottom of the first inning. Smith crushed a three-run homer to center field to give OCU an 11-0 third-inning lead.
In the second inning, Kali Pugh socked a two-run double to left-center field, and Laci Joyner followed with an RBI double to left.
Abby Meador limited Mount Mercy to one hit in five innings. Meador, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., retired the first nine batters she faced until Mallory Madsen reached on an error in the fourth. Kirsten Peterson had an infield single in the fifth for Mount Mercy's one hit. Meador improved to 12-0 on the year.

Smith went 2-for-2, scored three runs and drove in four. Pugh, a senior from Vista, Calif., scored twice and had two RBIs, while Ellis, a senior from Yukon, Okla., was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Georgia Wall went 2-for-3.
In the second game, Stephanie Koishor put OCU up 2-1 on a bunt hit to score Amanda Ingram from third base. Pugh tacked on an RBI double in the fourth, then Raeven Clark hit a two-run single in the fifth.
Ellis hammered a two-run shot over the left-field wall to wrap up the game for OCU. Ellis finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while Smith went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Pugh was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
OCU meets Sterling (Kan.) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
