Stars record two shutout wins over SAGU

OCU sets school record for wins to start season

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – The top-ranked Oklahoma City University softball team whitewashed Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 8-0 and 11-0 in two games Thursday at SAGU Field.
Oklahoma City won its 30th straight game this season and broke the school record for wins to start a season. The Stars won 29 games to begin the 2016 campaign. OCU, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, is now 30-0, 10-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU coach Phil McSpadden notched his 1,575th career victory. In his 30th year at OCU, McSpadden owns a 1,575-366 record to lead college softball in wins against four-year competition.
The Stars have gotten off to unbeaten starts of 20-plus victories three consecutive years now. OCU had a 23-0 start in 2015. Oklahoma City is now 97-3 over its last 100 games dating back to the beginning of the 2016 season.

Oklahoma City opened game one with three runs in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer by Jaci Smith and an RBI double from McRae Cayton.
The Stars then added five more in the third inning. In the inning, Kali Pugh hit a two-RBI double and was brought home by a two-run home run off the bat of Laci Joyner.
Joyner, a junior from Mustang, Okla., went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The homer was her first of the season.
Jayden Shores pitched all five innings in the run-rule victory. Shores gave up three hits, struck out seven and walked only one.
In game two of the twin bill, Oklahoma City scored over in double digits for the ninth time this season.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third when OCU erupted for nine runs in the inning, all coming with two outs.
The Stars generated nine hits and every player for OCU reached base in the inning while Pugh, Joyner, Cayton, and Amanda Ingram all had recorded RBIs.
OCU added two runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Bailey Whitmore.
Georgia Wall was spectacular on the mound for OCU, throwing five scoreless innings. Wall, a sophomore from Marlow, Okla., retired the final 15 batters she faced after allowing the first hitter of the game to reach base on an infield single. She struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.
Pugh, a senior from Vista, Calif., and Whitmore, a sophomore out of Oklahoma City, both went 2-for-4 in game two. Pugh produced two RBI and scored a run while Whitmore provided an RBI and one run scored.
OCU steps outside SAC play with a doubleheader against Mount Mercy (Iowa) starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
