Stars outlast MidAmerica Nazarene 73-63

Fifth-ranked OCU matches all-time mark for NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament wins

BILLINGS, Mont. – Oklahoma City University topped defending national champion MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 73-63 on Wednesday at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament.
Fifth-ranked Oklahoma City (30-2) tied Union (Tenn.) for the most NAIA Division I women's tournament wins. The Stars face 21st-ranked Montana Western at 11:45 a.m. Friday in the NAIA Tournament round of 16.
OCU improved its all-time NAIA Tournament record to 67-14 while reaching 30 victories for the 12th time in 17 years. The Stars posted their 19th consecutive 20-win season and 18th 25-win season in 19 years.
The contest matched teams that have won the past three national championships. MidAmerica Nazarene took its first NAIA Division I crown 49-35 over Baker (Kan.) on March 22, 2016 in Independence, Mo. OCU has captured national titles in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2015.
Daniela Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, fueled the Stars with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, while Daniela Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., added 17 points. Galindo tallied 11 points, and Wallen had nine of her points in the fourth quarter as OCU erased a one-point deficit entering the final period.
"We did a great job of adjusting in the second half to their size inside," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Once we were able to get a couple of stops, we felt more comfortable getting out in transition. Galindo and Wallen were great down the stretch, and I thought our inside players rebounded very well."
NaShyla Hammons hit free throws to give the Stars a 42-32 advantage with 6:15 to go in the third. MidAmerica Nazarene rallied to take a 47-46 edge on Jayden Oliver's 3-pointer with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.
With 8:04 left, Whitney Moia tied the game 53-53 with a jumper for MidAmerica Nazarene. OCU recorded the game's next six points. Wallen hit free throws, then Galindo added a bucket in the paint. Brooke Irwin scored to put the Stars ahead 59-53 at the 6:04 mark.
Oklahoma City shot 38.8 percent from the field to shoot below 40 percent for the third time this season. The Stars knocked in 8 of 14 shots from the floor in the fourth. OCU leads the NAIA in field-goal percentage this season.

Wallen notched her 15th double-double in 32 games this season and her 29th career double-double in 60 contests for OCU.
