OCU edges Montana Western 81-79

Galindo beats buzzer with jumper for fifth-ranked Stars

BILLINGS, Mont. – Daniela Galindo's jumper before time expired lifted Oklahoma City University to an 81-79 win over Montana Western on Friday at the Rimrock Auto Arena in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament.
Mariana Duran's halfcourt heave for a 3-pointer before halftime sparked the Stars. Fifth-ranked Oklahoma City (31-2) faces fourth-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 3 p.m. CDT Saturday in the NAIA Division I Tournament quarterfinals.
The Stars advanced to the quarters for the eighth time in nine years with their 17th consecutive victory. Brooke Irwin provided OCU with a season-best 24 points to go with four rebounds and two blocks.
On the game winner, Galindo fired in a 15-footer from the baseline after evading a Montana Western defender guarding a potential 3-point shot. The Stars set up a play from the sideline with 7.4 seconds left.

"When you get to this point in the tournament, you have great players playing and they make plays – that's what you saw tonight," Oklahoma City coach Bo Overton said. "I felt that we had an advantage with Irwin inside. I thought that she continued to play well throughout the game."
Irwin, a 6-foot-3 junior from Mustang, Okla., hit 11 of her 13 shots from the field. Irwin previously had 19 points at Southern-New Orleans on Nov. 26. Montana Western had only one 6-footer on its roster, Darby Shye, who played four minutes.
Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., produced 23 points, two assists and a team-high seven rebounds, while Daniela Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, posted 22 points, two assists and three steals for OCU.
The Stars shot 57.6 percent in the game and 63.6 percent in the second half from the field. Oklahoma City leads the NAIA in field-goal percentage. OCU improved to 8-0 against ranked teams this season after besting 21st-ranked Montana Western.
OCU's Allison Frey sank a follow shot that knotted the game 77-77 with 1:32 remaining. Janae Haag scored in the paint off Duran's feed for a 79-77 Stars edge with 1:08 showing. Montana Western downed two out of four free-throw tries in the final minute.

The Stars overcame a 10-point second-quarter deficit and a seven-point hole with 8:54 to go. Wallen's putback capped an 8-0 run that rallied OCU to a 67-66 edge at the 6:11 mark.

Duran, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezula, cut the Stars' halftime deficit to 39-32 by swishing in a trey on a throw from just beyond the 3-point line on the opposite end of the court.
