Dillard eliminates OCU 86-65

Stars conclude season 21-11

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City University bowed out of the NAIA Division I men's basketball tournament falling 86-65 to seventh-ranked Dillard (La.) on Wednesday at Municipal Auditorium.
Jonathan Reed, a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., led the Stars with 17 points. OCU finished its season 21-11.
Reed added six assists and three steals, while Tyler Alderman, a senior from Fishers, Ind., posted 12 points, 11 rebounds and two assists for OCU. Xavier Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, produced 11 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots for the Stars. Alderman supplied OCU with his fifth double-double of the season.
Oklahoma City went to 47-16 in NAIA Division I men's tournament play in its 23rd appearance in the tournament. OCU advanced to the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship game for the 12th time, turned in its first 20-win season since 2007-08, set a single-season school record for blocked shots (167) plus a single-game record for blocks (14) on Nov. 22 vs. Langston and led the NAIA in blocks this season. In 2016-17, the Stars had a 10-3 record in games decided by six point or less, 4-4 record vs. ranked teams while picking up five wins with buzzer beaters or winning baskets in the final minute.
Smith became the fifth from OCU and first Star since 2008 to become SAC player of the year, set OCU's single-season mark with 83 blocks and made the Dark Horse Dunker finals and the top 100 watch list for the Bevo Francis Award. Lou Dunbar collected OCU's first NAIA player of the week honor since 2005-06 after a 50-point outburst Jan. 26 vs. USAO for OCU's first 50-point performance in 50 years.
"I am really proud of this basketball team," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Obviously, we wanted a different ending to this season, but to overcome the adversity we faced says a lot about the character of these guys. Our team accomplished a lot this season that hasn't been done in years at OCU, and we should be very proud of that looking back on this season. Injuries are a part of what we do, but losing two key pieces throughout this season really slowed our momentum from a great start to the year. This was a fun team to coach this season, and we are really going to miss the three seniors that we lose."
The Stars built a 42-38 edge in rebounding vs. Dillard. Dillard limited OCU to 36.5 percent shooting from the field. Demetric Austin powered Dillard with 31 points. James Morris Jr. sank a trey that gave Dillard a 77-52 lead late in the game.
