Mid-America Christian stymies OCU 73-65

Stars face Southwestern Christian on Tuesday in SAC Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University concluded the regular season falling to Mid-America Christian 73-65 on Saturday at the Gaulke Activity Center.
OCU, ranked 19th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, completed the regular season 19-9, 10-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars square off with Southwestern Christian on Tuesday in Bethany, Okla., in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals.
Syrus McDonald and Xavier Smith supplied Oklahoma City with 15 points each. Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, hauled in a season-best 18 rebounds for his league-high 13th double-double of the season. Walter Rickett, a junior from Dallas, added nine points for the Stars.
The Stars scored the game's first seven points as Tyler Alderman hit a jumper in the lane to put OCU up 7-0 with 18:11 left in the first half. OCU led 31-17 with 4:10 left in the first period on Smith's jump shot in the paint.
Mid-America Christian reeled off a 10-0 run early in the second half to take the lead. Malcolm Mann hit free throws to put Mid-America up 36-35 at the 15:19 mark, then added a jumper. Robert Romero's bucket capped his team's run to put the Evangels ahead 40-35 with 14:22 left.
Defending national champion Mid-America Christian earned the eighth and last spot in the SAC Tournament with the victory.
