OCU nabs SAC title with 91-44 win over SAGU

Stars win seventh title in eight years

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University clinched its 17th Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season women's basketball championship with a 91-44 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I, also secured its 18th 25-win season in the last 19 years. The Stars pushed their record to 25-2, 16-1 in the SAC.
OCU captured the league regular-season crown for the seventh time in eight years.
"The best thing about this title is that nobody on this team had ever won one before," Stars head coach Bo Overton said. "These players joined the program, and they know the history, so the work they put in day in and day out has really shown on the court."
Daniela Wallen led the way for OCU scoring 24 points, 17 of which were in the first half, grabbing seven rebounds and recording three steals. Wallen, a senior out of Caracas, Venezuela, topped 20 points for the 12th straight game.
The Stars used a 24-4 run to begin the second quarter to pull away and led by as many as 48 in the fourth quarter after a JoHanna Beathard free throw made it 89-41.
"Overall, I thought it was a really sharp win over a quality team that sometimes gives us trouble," Overton said. "We came out focused and played extremely well for 40 minutes."
Daniela Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., provided OCU with 12 points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal in the win. Beathard, a freshman from Fletcher, Okla., recorded a career-high 11 points and three blocks shots as well as three rebounds.
As a team, the Stars shot 55.4 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from 3-point-range. OCU also outscored SAGU 46-16 in points in the paint and led 42-19 in bench points.
Charity Page, a 6-foot senior, led SAGU (10-16, 3-14 SAC) with 15 points and five rebounds.
The Stars play in their final regular-season game at 3 p.m. Saturday against Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City at the Gaulke Activity Center.
