Stars pull out 72-69 win at Bacone

OCU close out game on 8-1 run

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – The Oklahoma City University men's basketball team escaped with a 72-69 victory over Bacone on Saturday at Palmer Center.
Xavier Smith's alley-oop basket gave OCU the lead with 12 seconds left. OCU, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I, kept pace in the competitive Sooner Athletic Conference, moving to 18-6, 9-5 in league play, while Bacone dropped to 6-18, 2-12 in the SAC.
The Stars fell behind by as many as nine points in the second half, but closed the game on an 8-1 run. Oklahoma City forced a turnover on Bacone's final possession to secure the victory.
"We just make it really difficult on ourselves sometimes," Stars head coach Vinay Patel said. "It's frustrating from time to time, but give these kids credit. There was a couple of times they could have quit in the second half, but they didn't."
Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, led OCU with 16 points, eight rebounds and one blocked shot while shooting 6-of-10 from the floor.
The game was close throughout as the lead changed hands 12 times and was tied eight. The largest lead for the Stars came when Ryan Wiley hit a field goal to put them up 33-28.
"A lot of things didn't go our way tonight," Patel said, "but I feel like the biggest credit I can give our guys is to not quit, grind and find a way to get this win."
Syrus McDonald, a senior from Flint, Mich., scored in double figures for the ninth time this season as he produced 13 points, two assists and one steal.
The Stars were outrebounded 38-34, but shot 43.9 percent from the floor while Bacone shot just 35.8 percent.
For the Warriors, Brandon Scott led all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds.
OCU's next contest will be 8 p.m. Thursday in Chickasha, Okla., against USAO at Drover Fieldhouse.
