OCU knocks off No. 25 MidAmerica Nazarene, Bethany

Delgado, Knoche hurl gems for Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University baseball team continued its hot start with a 2-1 nail-biter over MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) and a 6-0 whitewash of Bethany (Kan.) on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars' Branden Grieger, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., reached base in six of his seven at-bats on the day. Oklahoma City improved its record to 8-1 this season with the two wins.
MidAmerica Nazarene, ranked 25th in the NAIA, dropped to 0-3, and Bethany moved to 7-1.
In game one, OCU got an excellent start from Roberto Delgado as he threw six innings, giving up one unearned run, two hits and struck out eight. Delgado, a junior from Killeen, Texas, picked up his second victory of the season and has now struck out 18 batters in 11 innings this season while walking only one.
The Stars scored their only two runs in the second inning. After a Cory Linn walk and a Garrett Foster single, Skyler Bean roped a two-RBI double into left center-field. Bean, a senior from Garland, Texas, recorded his third double of the season and went 1-for-2 on the day.
MidAmerica Nazarene scored on Jacob Jenkins' one-out single up the middle in the seventh. OCU's J.R. Holloway, however, got a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and secure his first save of the season.
In game two, OCU got another excellent outing from their starting pitcher as Craig Knoche hurled a seven-inning shutout. Knoche, a junior from Tempe, Ariz., scattered five hits and had nine strikeouts while not walking a batter. The Oklahoma City pitching staff hasn't allowed a walk in 16 innings.
OCU got on the board early with two runs in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Cory Linn and Shaun Corso. Those two combined to go 4-for-7 with three RBIs in game two.
The Stars struck for another run in the third when Grieger doubled to open the inning and reached home on a double by Corso.
Foster added another run in the fourth when he lifted his third home run of the season over the center-field fence. Seth Jones followed with his first collegiate hit, a double into left-center field. He scored on a Grieger single.
Grieger went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI in the second game.
OCU will take on Bethany once again at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
