OCU subdues Houston-Victoria 4-1

Stars go 3-0 in Cowtown Classic to begin season

FORT WORTH, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University knocked off Houston-Victoria 4-1 on Friday at Gateway Park in the Cowtown Classic in a matchup of top 20-ranked NAIA softball teams.
The Stars also edged Columbia (Mo.) 2-0 and pounded Tabor (Kan.) 10-0 as part of the defending national champions' opening weekend. Jaden Shores threw a no-hitter vs. Tabor in her first career start.
Against Houston-Victoria, Bailey Whitmore drove in the winning runs with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Jaci Smith added RBI doubles in the first and the sixth.
Georgia Wall held Houston-Victoria to one run on three hits in a complete-game effort. Wall, a sophomore from Marlow, Okla., struck out six.
Smith, a sophomore from Godley, Texas, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while McRae Cayton, a fifth-year senior from Irvine, Calif., was 2-for-3 with a run scored for OCU.
Abby Meador and Wall combined to hold Columbia to two hits. Meador, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., fanned five in four innings to gain the victory. Wall tossed three innings to record the save.
Smith brought home the Stars' first run with a groundout in the fourth. Kali Pugh added an RBI base hit in the fifth.
Against Tabor, Shores, a freshman from Blanchard, Okla., struck out five in five innings. Shores allowed only two walks.
Pugh, a senior from Vista, Calif., stole home while executing a double steal with Smith. Madison Ellis, a senior from Yukon, Okla., went 3-for-4 with three runs driven in, while Cayton was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
OCU faces Doane (Neb.) at 11 a.m., then William Woods (Mo.) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
