Stars upend USAO 92-80

23rd-ranked OCU hands seventh-ranked USAO its first loss of season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University toppled USAO 92-80 on Wednesday night at Abe Lemons Arena in a contest pitting top 25-ranked teams in NAIA Division I men's basketball.
Jonathan Ellis posted a season-best 19 points to lead the Stars. No. 23-ranked Oklahoma City (7-2, 1-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) dropped seventh-rated USAO (9-1, 1-1 SAC) from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Ellis, a senior from Powder Springs, Ga., tallied his most points since his career-high 20-point outing vs. Mid-America Christian on Jan. 5. Ellis added six assists and three steals while shooting 7-for-8 from the field.
Ridell Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., supplied OCU with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Elijah Christman, a junior from Justin, Texas, turned in 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Stars.
Oklahoma City scored 90 or more points for the seventh time in nine games and halted a two-game losing skid.
"I'm really proud of having 15 assists to 11 turnovers especially right now when we're still figuring out who we are," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Everyone can see we're very talented offensively. We're asking guys to make plays to get other guys shots. That's where Jon came up big for us tonight."
Mark Howell sank free throws to push OCU's lead into double digits at 46-36 with 2:17 remaining in the first half.
The Drovers whittled away at the Stars' advantage until Brandon Scott nailed a 3-pointer to even the score 65-65 midway through the second half. Caleb Nichols added free throws to put USAO on top 67-65 with 10:20 to go.
Oklahoma City responded with a 7-0 run as Williams scored off an Ellis feed to give the Stars back the lead 69-67 at the 9:22 mark. OCU used an 8-0 surge to push its lead back into double digits. Camidge ignited the onslaught by connecting on a 3, then added a 3-point play to make the OCU cushion 83-71 with 3:39 left.
The Stars continue league play against John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
