Stars edge past Bacone 62-59

LaCour leads Stars with game-high 18 points

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University won its fourth consecutive game after edging past Bacone 62-59 on Saturday at the Palmer Center.
OCU, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, while Bacone dropped to 6-3 on the year and 1-2 in the SAC. Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, led the Stars with a game-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds and four blocks.
"It was a great win to end our first semester," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "Taylor LaCour really played well. It's always tough to match how hard Bacone plays, but I thought we did that in the second half."
The Stars fell behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, but responded with a 14-5 run, turning Warrior turnovers into easy transition baskets. OCU carried the momentum into the second quarter and outscored Bacone 18-11 to take a nine-point lead into the break. After the game's first 20 minutes, Oklahoma City shot 48.3 percent from the field and held its opponent to 25.0 percent from the floor.
Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., led the Stars in scoring with 10 points at the half. For the game, Galindo poured in 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. LaCour finished the first half with eight points, two rebounds and three blocks
Bacone jumped to a hot start to begin the second half, blitzing OCU 7-2 in the first two minutes. The Warriors tightened up the defense and took a 39-38 lead midway through the quarter. Bacone held Oklahoma City to just 12 points in the third quarter and cut the OCU lead to one heading into the fourth quarter.
Oklahoma City avoided another poor start to a quarter in the fourth by getting baskets around the rim and going on an 11-2 run to stretch its lead to double-digits. The Warriors battled back and made it a two-possession game late, but OCU was able to fend off a late Bacone rally and come away with the win.
"I thought Payton Taylor and Michaela Kay did a good job of handling that first wave of pressure," Overton said. "It seemed like when we needed a basket Daniela would a find a way to get one."
Taylor, a freshman from Ada, Okla., added nine points, seven rebounds and two assists for the Stars on Saturday, while Alexis Hill contributed seven points and seven boards. OCU outrebounded Bacone 37-27, but turned the ball over 23 times compared to the Warriors' 15.
Oklahoma City takes a two-week break before returning to the court on Jan. 4 against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) for a 6 p.m. tipoff at Abe Lemons Arena.
