OCU holds off Northern New Mexico 95-86

Camidge goes for 24 points in Wednesday’s win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Twenty-two second-half points from Oklahoma City University's Ridell Camidge led the Stars to a 95-86 victory over Northern New Mexico Wednesday in the Mid-America Christian Classic at the Gaulke Activity Center.
OCU, ranked 12th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, moved to 4-0 on the season. Northern New Mexico dropped to 2-6 overall in the loss. Camidge fueled the Stars with 24 total points, six rebounds and two assists in the win.
"One of the things I really like about coaching Ridell is you can really get after that kid and he is a 'yes sir, no sir' kind of kid, and he really responds when you challenge him," OCU head coach Vinay Patel said. "I've really challenged him quite a bit these last few games at halftime and things like that. He responds great, and then he comes out and produces."
Three other Oklahoma City players joined Camidge with double-digit scoring performances. Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., poured in 20 points and added seven rebounds on the night. Terence Bonhomme, the reigning Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week, notched 18 points and Elijah Christman tallied 11.
The Stars jumped out to a quick double-digit lead five minutes into Wednesday's contest, but went cold on the offensive end as the half carried on. Bonhomme rattled off five quick points for OCU, only to score just four more for the remainder of the half. Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., was forced to sit for the majority of the first half after earning two quick fouls.
Northern New Mexico tried most of the night to exploit the size advantage it had in the post, feeding big man Dominique Josephs for 13 points and seven rebounds. After the game's first 20 minutes, the Eagles outscored the Stars 28-12 in the paint, and outrebounded OCU by six.
But Patel's squad battled back in the second half and quickly erased the seven-point deficit the Eagles had created. The Stars sprung to an 18-4 run, retook the lead and didn't look back from there. OCU not only cranked up the defensive intensity in the second half, but also took smart shots through fluid offense that improved their shooting percentage to 50 percent.
"It was a really difficult first half to sit back and watch," Patel said. "I'm glad we went through some adversity, and glad we still found some success to win the game. Hopefully that helps with the process of understanding that, hey, if we do things a certain way, we're going to have success. If we do things our own way, we're not going to have success."
OCU outscored NNMC 56-40 in the second half, at one point building a 13-point lead. The Stars also capitalized with 23 points off turnovers compared to the Eagles' 20.
Oklahoma City returns to action for its final game of the Mid-America Christian Classic at 7 p.m. Friday against Ecclesia (Ark.) in the Gaulke Activity Center.
