WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University used two second-half goals to knock off fourth-seeded Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 3-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament quarterfinals Friday evening.
The fifth-seeded Stars improved to 10-6-1 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. OCU halted Southwestern Assemblies of God's four-game winning streak, ending the Lady Lions' year at 11-8.
SAGU got on the scoreboard first in Friday's contest, knocking in a goal off a penalty kick in the 35th minute. The Lions looked to carry their lead into the break, but OCU snuck in a goal seconds before the first half whistle blew.
Jeanene Smith, a sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, scored off Natalie Eley's corner kick to tie the game at one just before halftime. The goal was Smith's second of the season.
The Stars struck again not even a minute into the second half, as Katie Vaughn scored off a corner taken by Madeleine Sjoholm and flicked on by Sara Ricks.
Eley then gave OCU a two-goal advantage with about 30 minutes remaining when a lead-pass from Keeley Brewer set her up for a one-on-one against the SAGU keeper. Eley chipped a shot past the keeper and tallied her seventh goal of the year.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday for a SAC Tournament semifinal matchup against top-seeded John Brown (Ark.) in Siloam Springs, Ark.
