SAN ANTONIO – Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) derailed top-ranked Oklahoma City University 96-93 in double overtime Saturday at the Mabee Gymnasium in the Our Lady of the Lake Classic.
Our Lady of the Lake, ranked 13th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, overcame Daniela Galindo's career-best 37-point effort as Nakia Page sank the winning 3-pointer. OCU (6-2) saw its five-game winning streak snapped.
Page struck for a trey from the left wing with 1.5 seconds left for Our Lady of the Lake (5-2). Galindo hit free throws with 8.7 seconds remaining to forge a 93-93 tie. The two teams were tied 12 times and the lead changed hands 14 times during Saturday's contest.
Galindo's 15-foot jumper from the free-throw line knotted the game 87-87 with 50 seconds left in the first extra period.
Kasey Saldana of Our Lady of the Lake connected on a 3 from the top of the key with 7.2 seconds to go in regulation to even the score 79-79 and move the game into overtime.
In the fourth, the Saints went ahead 72-63 on Francesca Patrick's free throws with 6:59 to go. OCU battled back to take a 75-74 edge as Alexis Hill nailed a pair of free-throw shots with 45 seconds left. Hill added a couple of free throws to put the Stars on top 79-76 with 14 seconds showing.
Oklahoma City reeled off a first-quarter 8-0 run to build a 19-9 lead. Michaela Kay and Galindo downed consecutive 3-pointers, then Taylor LaCour scored on a follow shot at the 3:06 mark for OCU's largest lead of the game.
Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., picked up eight rebounds and three assists while shooting 9-for-9 from the free-throw line and 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Galindo surpassed her 31-point output against Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship March 4. OCU dropped in 30 of its 32 free-throw attempts.
OCU's Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., compiled 15 points and eight rebounds, and LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, posted 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while knocking in eight of her nine free-throw tries.
The Stars open SAC play 3 p.m. Dec. 2 at Mid-America Christian inside the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City. OCU, the preseason conference favorite, has won two out of the past three and 17 overall SAC regular-season crowns.
