Stars rout Mid-America Christian 77-49

OCU opens conference play in dominant fashion

OKLAHOMA CITY – Daniela Galindo poured in 27 points as top-ranked Oklahoma City University rolled to a 77-49 win over Mid-America Christian on Saturday at the Gaulke Activity Center.
OCU, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Mid-America Christian dropped to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.
The Stars have yet to lose a conference opener since the 2009-10 season, when they fell to Oklahoma Baptist 72-64 in overtime Dec. 3, 2009.
"I really liked our effort today on the defensive end," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "Mid-America Christian is a very good shooting team, and I thought we did a good job of contesting shots. I don't know if we will play a team that plays as hard as MACU."
Oklahoma City jumped on the Lady Evangels early, creating a seven-point lead midway through the first quarter. The Stars forced Mid-America Christian into tough shots, holding their opponent to just 32.5 percent from the field and 0-of-8 from 3-point range in the first half. OCU ended the first half on a 15-8 run, building a 15-point lead at the break.
Galindo sparked the Stars on offense, going for 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the first half. She carried that momentum into the second half and finished with a game-high 27 points, 14 of which came from the free-throw line. In her last three contests, Galindo is averaging 30.3 points per game.
"Daniela continues to play well," Overton said. "We all know she can make 3s. I think it's the way she is attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line that makes her hard to guard."
The Stars kept up the defensive intensity in the second half, holding Mid-America Christian to 23.1 percent from the field and 1-of-23 from beyond the arc for the game. The Evangels entered Saturday's contest as the highest scoring team in the NAIA Division I, but were held to under 50 points for just the first time this season.
Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, added 15 points and six rebounds for the Stars on Saturday. Also scoring in double figures was Michaela Kay with 11 points. Payton Taylor finished the day with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Oklahoma City outrebounded Mid-America Christian 48-41 and tied the Evangels in points in the paint with 22. The Stars got 15 points from their bench while Mid-America Christian got 14 points.
OCU returns to action on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tipoff against USAO at Abe Lemons Arena.
