OCU tops Benedictine 73-60

No. 1-rated Stars hand ninth-ranked Benedictine its first loss of season

ATCHISON, Kan. – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University scooped up a 73-60 victory over Benedictine (Kan.) on Tuesday evening at Ralph Nolan Gymnasium in a clash of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA Division I women's basketball.
Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., provided the Stars with 19 points, seven rebounds and four 3-pointers. OCU (5-1) knocked ninth-ranked Benedictine (7-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., produced 14 points and six rebounds, while Payton Taylor, a freshman from Ada, Okla., posted 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor for the Stars.
Alexis Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., sparked OCU's second unit with nine points, five rebounds and four assists, and NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, notched a team-best five assists and three steals. Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and three steals.
"I thought Daniela did a great job of getting us going in the first with the 3s she made," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "We were able to get Michaela Kay more minutes, and she responded by making more shots. Payton Taylor played her best game. We really did a good job of getting the ball in the right spots. Brooke, Taylor, Alexis and NaShyla made it tough on them on the defensive side."
The Stars held Benedictine to a 38.1 percent field-goal percentage overall and 35.9 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. OCU hit 49 percent from the field in the game and 58.3 percent during the first half. OCU sank 9 of 16 3-point shots led by Galindo's 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Benedictine entered the contest holding opponents to 64.7 points per game and 39.4 percent shooting from the field.
"I'm really proud of the toughness our team showed tonight," Overton said. "Benedictine is a very good, physical club. It was hard to get easy shots against them."
Galindo gave OCU its biggest lead of the night 66-49 with a bucket at the 4:24 mark of the fourth quarter. The Stars erased a second-quarter 27-19 deficit by reeling off a 15-2 surge. Galindo and Kay dropped in back-to-back treys to put OCU in the lead and cap the run. Galindo and Taylor touched off the Stars' onslaught with consecutive 3-pointers.
Oklahoma City takes on Culver-Stockton (Mo.) at 6 p.m. Friday in the Our Lady of the Lake Classic in San Antonio.
