Stars knock off Loyola 77-62

Irwin supplies OCU with team-high 21 points

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University prevailed 77-62 over Loyola (La.) on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Oklahoma City Classic presented by Courtyard Marriott Northwest.
Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., provided the Stars with 21 points and five rebounds in the matchup of top 20-ranked teams in NAIA Division I women's basketball. OCU moved to 4-1 on the season.
Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, contributed 13 points and nine rebounds, while Alexis Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., added 12 points, three rebounds and three assists on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor for the Stars. Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., posted 10 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Oklahoma City came out on top in its first matchup with a ranked opponent this season. Loyola (4-3) held the 20th spot in the preseason top-25 poll.
"It was a really good win for our team," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Loyola's a good squad. Last year we beat them at their place at the buzzer. They had a lot of players coming back from that team. We knew it was going to be a tough game. I'm proud of our guys with the way we executed and got the ball in the basket, especially inside. I thought Brooke, Alexis and Taylor were great."
OCU held a 30-24 advantage in points in the paint. Irwin sank 10 of 15 from the field to power the Stars to a wire-to-wire victory.
"That's why she's tough to guard," Overton said. "If you get on one shoulder, she can go the other way. People don't realize she has great feet. She has an athletic family. Her brother played football at Oklahoma, and he was a great player there. She's got great feet. She can run and move. She handles the ball better and better all the time. We need Brooke to play well. As she goes, it opens things up for the rest of the crew."
The Stars built their largest lead of the day 65-46 on LaCour's inside basket off Hill's feed early in the fourth quarter.
OCU takes on ninth-ranked Benedictine (Kan.) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Atchison, Kan.
