OCU demolishes Langston 90-55

Galindo scores season-high 29 points in Friday’s win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Daniela Galindo scorched Langston for a season-high 29 points to lead top-ranked Oklahoma City University to a 90-55 victory in its first game of the Oklahoma City Classic presented by Courtyard Marriott Northwest on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., also snagged nine rebounds, got six steals and dished three assists in the win. OCU, ranked No. 1 in NAIA women's basketball, improved to 3-1 overall, and Langston dropped to 2-5.
"I thought we executed a lot better," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "We're another week into the season, we've had more practices. I was really proud of Galindo and we're ready to get her going."
Oklahoma City jumped out to a seven-point lead after the first quarter and stretched its lead to double digits by halftime. The Stars' pestering defense caused the Lions to shoot just 29.4 percent from the field and turn the ball over 10 times in the first half.
After the final horn, Langston's shooting percentage dipped to 26.6 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from 3-point range. The Stars were also dominant on the boards, outrebounding the Lions 55-41. On the offensive end, OCU assisted on 19 of its 30 made baskets and outscored Langston 38-14 in the paint.
"Payton Taylor coming in as a freshman and handling the ball for us, is getting better every day," Overton said. "I thought this was a big test for her tonight and she did a great job. What it does is it gets Galindo off the ball on the wing and now she can go do her thing which showed tonight."
Taylor, a freshman from Ada., Okla., finished the night with three points, four assists and four rebounds. Taylor has now had back-to-back games with at least four assists.
Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, notched season-highs in both points (18) and rebounds (nine) in Friday's win. She finished the game 7-of-15 from the floor and added three assists, two steals and a block.
Also scoring in double-figures for OCU were Brooke Irwin and Alexis Hill. Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., had 13 points and six rebounds while Hill, a senior from Byng, Okla., tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.
Michaela Kay and Stefanie Mitchell each made the season debut for the Stars on Friday night. Kay grabbed three rebounds in seven minutes and Mitchell had two points, two steals and three rebounds in nine minutes.
Oklahoma City returns to action in its second game of the Oklahoma City Classic at 3 p.m. Saturday against Loyola (La.) at Abe Lemons Arena.
