OCU sinks Randall 102-89

Stars ring up game-turning 15-0 second-half run

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rallied past Randall 102-89 on Monday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., powered the Stars with 25 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. OCU, ranked 12th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, remained undefeated at 6-0.
Oklahoma City surpassed 100 points for the third time this season and seventh time in Vinay Patel's third season as head coach. The Stars overcame a nine-point first-half deficit by burying Randall under a 15-0 run early in the second half.
"I thought they did a great job coming in the first half and really keeping us on our heels, getting in the paint, really spacing us out, finding shooters in the corners," Patel said of Randall. "They shot the ball extremely well. In the second half, we finally starting getting stops. Our defense started turning into offense, and that's where the game kind of changed."
The Stars took the lead for good when Williams scored in the paint off Terence Bonhomme's assist for a 56-55 edge at the 16:57 mark. Ridell Camidge followed with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Bonhomme capped the onslaught with a trey for a 65-55 OCU advantage with 14:15 to go.
OCU shot 66.7 percent from the field in the second period and finished the game with 23 assists as a team. Mark Howell, a junior from Grand Prairie, Texas, led the Stars with eight assists, while Bonhomme, a senior from St. Martinville, La., produced 21 points, six assists and five 3-pointers.

"You look at the assists, and that's where it starts showing up," Patel said. "Last Wednesday, we played a half where we had only one assist. We have not been turning over the basketball, but we haven't been getting a ton of assists. I thought we got some really good play out of our guards."
Mark Berokoff led Randall to the National Christian College Association of America Division II title last season. Randall dropped to 1-5, but the team's win came against 22nd-ranked Mid-America Christian 67-66 on Oct. 28 in Moore, Okla.
"Randall came in, and I thought they had a great game plan," Patel said. "They did exactly what we told our team what was going to happen. They executed it to a tee. Our defense is just not there yet. My hat's off to Coach Berokoff. I keep telling people they have a really good basketball team, and he's a really good basketball coach. His teams come in prepared, and they play super hard. He's got a great group that's been playing together for a long time. There's a reason they've been really good these last few years."
Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., turned in his first double-double with OCU of 19 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Walter Rickett, a senior from Dallas, added 12 points and two steals. Oklahoma City piled up 30 points in transition.
The Stars face Midwestern State (Texas) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Wichita Falls, Texas in an exhibition. The game was rescheduled after being originally set for Oct. 30. Follow the game on live stats.
