Stars win nail biter at Langston 74-72

OCU earns comeback win to start season 1-0

LANGSTON, Okla. – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University erased a seven-point deficit with 53 seconds left to earn a come-from-behind, season-opening victory against Langston 74-72 at C. Felton Gayles Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Four Stars scored in double figures in the team's first game of the 2017-18 women's basketball campaign. Daniela Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., led the way with a game-high 19 points.

Senior Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., added 10 points and nine rebounds for OCU.
"I'm really proud of our players for the way we executed down the stretch," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "Langston has a very good team, and I know how hard it is to win at their place. I thought our seniors were great tonight."
Neither team was able to pull away in the first half of Wednesday's contest, as the two squads combined for 25 turnovers after the first two quarters and headed into the break knotted at 33. Taylor LaCour, a junior from Georgetown, Texas, led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. She finished the game with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
OCU built a six-point lead early in the third quarter, but Langston responded by going on a 14-5 run and ended the quarter with a three-point advantage. The Lions carried their offensive momentum into the fourth quarter, burying timely threes and extended their lead to seven points with just under a minute to go.
The Stars battled back, eventually cutting the Langston lead to one after Galindo sank two free-throws and knocked down a three. The Lions turned the ball over on the next possession. Galindo missed the go-ahead shot, but her miss was corralled and put back by NaShyla Hammons to put OCU ahead 73-72 with seven seconds remaining.
Langston was then fouled and had an opportunity to force overtime or regain the lead, but missed both. The Lions ended the night 11-for-20 from the line, while the Stars went 21-for-25. OCU outrebounded Langston 40-30.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday in an exhibition game against Texas.
