Stars trounce SAGU 3-0

Oklahoma City wins its third consecutive match in dominate fashion

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University men's soccer trounced Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 3-0 Saturday at Stars Field for its third win in a row.
The Stars jumped to 13-3-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU, now sitting in third place in the SAC, has a good chance to earn a top-four finish in the conference and host an opening-round game in the SAC Tournament with just one game remaining. SAGU fell to 1-12-1 overall and 0-8-1 in SAC play.
Senior Jeffrey Matthews got the scoring started for the Stars on Saturday, as he out-jumped the SAGU keeper and headed in a high cross from Logan Stewart. The goal was Matthews' second of the year, while Stewart tallied his seventh assist on the season – leading OCU in that category.
The Stars struck again early in the second half when a pass from Petar Djurdjevic met a wide open Henrik Verolet in the center of the box for an easy score. Verolet, a junior from Schliengen, Germany, notched his fifth goal of the season.
Then in the 69th minute, OCU put the game away when Alexandre Taiar dribbled down the left side of the field and fit a cross through traffic to James Beattie for a one-touch goal. Taiar, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has now scored or assisted in ten games this year.
Seniors Vladimir Kalajdzic and Daniel Paugh shared time in goal and combined for three saves and a shutout. Kalajdzic has 81 saves and 16 goals allowed this year.
Matthews, Stewart, Taiar, Kalajdzic and Paugh were joined by fellow seniors Fabian Henningsen and Scott Sewell to be honored for OCU's Senior Day before Saturday's match.
Oklahoma City concludes the regular season at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Central Christian (Kan.) in McPherson, Kan.
