Stars post 62-50 win over Southwestern Assemblies

OCU remains unbeaten in league play

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University notched a 62-50 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at the Sheaffer Center.
Daniela Wallen propelled OCU with 32 points. The Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 13-1, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, posted her ninth double-double of the season, adding 12 rebounds and three steals. Wallen has 23 double-doubles in 41 career games for Oklahoma City.
The Stars built a 16-point lead on four occasions for their largest advantage of the day. Wallen hit a pair of free throws to cap an 8-2 run to open the second half. OCU led 40-24 with 6:16 to go in the third quarter after its surge.
"We had a good road win against a team that played very hard against us," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "I liked the way we attacked the basket better in the second half."
The Stars' Mariana Duran, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, added 10 points, reaching double-digit scoring for the fifth time this season, and Leah Cheney, a senior from Ault, Colo., collected a season-best seven points and two assists.
Brooke Irwin, a junior from Mustang, Okla., picked up six points and four rebounds, while Janae Haag, a senior from Olpe, Kan., contributed five points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals off the bench for OCU.
The Stars erased a 10-6 early deficit. Duran tied the game 12-12 on a set of free throws, then Allison Frey put OCU in front 14-12 late in the first quarter with a jumper in the lane.
In the second period, the Stars reeled off a 7-0 run to go up 21-14 with 4:03 left in the quarter. Wallen sank free throws, while Haag nailed a trey during OCU's flurry. Cheney completed the run by hitting a pair of free-throw shots.
OCU takes on Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
