OCU blows past Southwestern Christian 81-51

Stars push winning streak to 13 games

OKLAHOMA CITY –Oklahoma City University women's basketball team took home an 81-51 victory over Southwestern Christian on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Daniela Wallen led OCU with 19 points. The Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I, moved to 14-1, 5-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference on the season to remain the only unbeaten team in conference play. Southwestern Christian fell to 8-7, 0-5 SAC.
Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and recorded four steals to lead Oklahoma City. The double-double was the 10th of the season and the 24th of her career.
"Daniela Wallen just seems to turn things around for us," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "When things are going a little slow she'll get a steal or crazy rebound to somehow get the ball in the basket. She's special."
Brooke Irwin and Daniela Galindo both scored in double figures for OCU. Irwin, a junior from Mustang, Okla., provided 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., scored 12 points and had two steals.
The Stars held a decided advantage over Southwestern Christian in rebounds (47-24), second chance points (16-0) and points in the paint (34-22).
"I thought if we could rebound the ball we had a really good chance to win," Overton said. "We talked about coming out and rebounding well in the second half, and when you look at the rebounding numbers you can tell that really helped us."
Southwestern Christian was led by Eliora Johnson, who had 23 points, five rebounds and blocked two shots.
OCU fell behind 10-5 early, but used an 11-2 run to end the first quarter up 16-12. They extended the lead to 14 with 8:09 left in the third quarter thanks to a 3-pointer by Galindo.
The Stars poured it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Eagles 18-6 over the last 8:47.
Mariana Duran, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, recorded a career-high 11 assists to go along with eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.
OCU looks to keep their undefeated conference record intact Saturday against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 1 p.m. in Plainview, Texas.
